Fooooooood trippin’
Lettuce wraps, fresh coconuts, cod in a coconut sauce over lentils, Guu, tofu stir fry and bahn mi (the best sandwich I have ever made). All in the span of 5 days.
I haven’t cooked much while I’ve been home. Largely because the parentals make the best Filipino food. And I have missed it sooo much. Why mess with the best right? But alas, the kitchen called and I dug up new recipes to try, and had my sister as my guinea pig. It was also a great way to procrastinate from all the law that I should have been studying…
But let’s highlight some new restaurant faves! I went out to the trendiest Mexican restaurant I have ever been too earlier in the week. Thankfully the food was as great as the aesthetic and vibe of the restaurant. So if you ever find yourself in Toronto, head to Queen St. West, but really west and pop into Grand Electric. The tacos are delicious, the bourbon surprisingly fantastic, the guac pretty tasty and that key lime vaso, mouthwatering. It’s a hole in the wall (but super chic) so be prepared to wait it out for tables. I think they only have the capacity to hold 30-40 people at a time. But it will be worth it (the food is fab, but so too are the amazingly dressed and good looking people you get to mingle with)!
Another highlight has to be Body Blitz. I know, not a restaurant. Obvi. Bonded with the sister there and wow did my body ever need it! The night before I was suckered into going to Yoga Cross with Julie and her words of “you will puke!” should have been the clearest indication of what I was going to face. 60 minutes, temperatures in the high 30s and plyometrics/yoga = near pukeage. I remember the room constantly spinning after the first 4 -30second circuit. I wanted to quit after the 2 minute dolphin plank, somewhere during the pushups and reach, or maybe when we had to wheel barrow across the room? But I didn’t because our instructor was beyond amazing. It helped tremendously that she had a great playlist and did that whole “only 10 seconds left” thing which forces you to continue because really, what’s 10 more seconds of hell? Needless to say our bodies were calling for that spa time and snow storm or not (Winter finally arrived!), Julie and I braved the cold and headed to T.dot for Blitz. Dipping in various temps and different kinds of waters (sea salt, green tea, etc) does the body wonders! We followed the cycle of going from moderately warm, to warm, to blistering hot steam room and to a cold ice bath. That doesn’t sound so fun at first, but believe me when I say it does wonders to any aches and pains you may have, and I had plenty. I personally lost track of time for a bit because of how relaxing it was and due to the fact that my sister and I decided to talk about every little thing going on in our lives. Sister time was amazing and I’m reminded once again of how incredibly lucky I am.
And as a reward, we hit up Guu and despite a 40 minute wait (which allowed both of us to marvel at these fab black boots now on our wish list) it did not disappoint! Japanese food like I’ve never had it before and some major laughs from Jules was a perfect way to end our date.
The food freak in me will get to revel some more as I head to O.Noir tonight in Toronto.
This is my last week at home so you better believe I’ll take advantage of all the variety available. Once I cross the pond, the food options reduce dramatically.
Happy Sunday!
[and absolutely obsessed with this right now. Sounds like no other out there!]
